Designing Your New Patio

Just like most other landscaping projects, installing a new patio is a very unique addition to your home. While selecting a multitude of factors – such as color, material, texture, features, size, and location – can be an extremely daunting task, creating the right patio for your home will provide a beautiful outdoor area for relaxation, barbecues with friends, and spending time with the family. By outlining the most significant qualities that they consider when designing an outdoor living area, our experienced engineers created this blog post to help you plan for the patio of your dreams!

Size
Size is the most important factor when installing a new patio. Making it too small may make the space feel cramped and unusable while, on the other hand, making the area too big may feel like a waste of space and money. To help with this challenge, we often ask our customers questions about how they will be using the space before deciding on an exact size. “Are you looking for a spot for a large dining table? Will you need space for a grill? How big is your outdoor furniture? Do you like to entertain outdoors? What types of features are you looking for in your patio?” The answers to these types of questions will help greatly in determining the exact size of the patio area.

Location
After you have decided the approximate size of your patio, it next makes sense to determine its location.  We like to recommend to have the area close to an entry door so as to make the patio feel like an extension of the home. Also, with your new outdoor living space being close to the house, it makes bringing items in and out of the home much easier. This makes entertaining friends and families at barbecues and get-togethers a breeze!

Features
Determine the type of features you would like your patio have. Do you want to install seat walls, a fire pit, a pergola, or an outdoor kitchen? Once you have determined your desired features, the space for a patio should be able to accommodate them all with allowing for plenty of space in between.

Material
The last major decision in installing a brick patio is selecting the material. We usually like to recommend different brick type options based on the feedback from the customer, as well as their desired features and budget. By providing a few different options with accompanying pictures and color charts, the customer can really begin to envision their new patio. Additionally, we have created an outdoor display showcasing a wide variety of brick pavers, walls, and inlays located at our office at 2900 S. 166th Street, New Berlin. It is open 24/7 (even on weekends) and is well lit for night viewing, so you can feel free to stop by at your convenience.

Unilock Hollandstone

With its simple rectangular shape, this paver is extremely versatile in coloration and in design. Hollandstone is available in many beautiful colors ranging from the speckled tans of Sierra to the deep black of Charcoal. Additionally, Hollandstone’s uniform shape can be used to make different patterns such as “Herringbone” or “Double-Basket Weave”. This cost-effective paver can be successfully implemented into any landscape project without breaking the bank.

Unilock Brussels Block

This style is known as “the original tumbled paver”. This can be credited to the similar attributes it shares with quarried stone, as well as its irregular edges. If you are looking for a classic, elegant look at a very affordable price, this paver’s timeworn appearance will complement your home’s existing features for a look that you will truly enjoy for years to come. Brussels Block is, by far, our most heavily demanded style of brick. This paver also has a matching wall unit that can be used to make seat walls and fire pits.

Unilock Richcliff

Although it is more expensive than the other pavers mentioned in this article, Richcliff is certainly worth the extra cost. Because of the exceedingly refined manufacturing process that this stone goes through, Richcliff is extremely fade resistant and is measured to be four times stronger than concrete! The glossy and embossed surface will add a touch of elegance to any landscape project. Richcliff is fabulous for those looking to give their home a stunning and refreshingly modern renovation.

What is polymeric sand and how does it work?

Polymeric sand is a sand like material that contains a unique polymer that is placed in between the joints of brick pavers. When the material is activated with water, it creates a flexible “mortar-like” bond in between the pavers and acts as a joint stabilizer.

Why should I install Polymeric Sand on my patio or walkway?
1. It will decrease the amount of water that travels in between the pavers.
2. It allows for freeze/thaw without cracking the pavers.
3. Forms a tighter bond in between the pavers than traditional joint sand.
4. Decreases maintenance and increases longevity of a patio or walkway.
5. Reduces the chance of weeds growing through joints.

Can I install Polymeric Sand myself?
-Yes, you can install polymeric sand yourself. However, the process is very tedious, time-consuming and if installed incorrectly it can ruin your patio or walkway. The brick surface needs to be cleaned thoroughly before installation, then the Polymeric Sand is swept into each and every joint by hand. Once the sand is in the joints, each paver surface must be swept clean of the Polymeric Sand. If the brick pavers are not cleaned before the sand is activated, then a permanent haze can form on the pavers. Once cleaned, a quick coating of water is applied to the joints to activate the polymer within the sand. After initial activation, the surface should remain clear of furniture and foot traffic for 24 hours to allow the Polymeric Sand to form it’s initial bond.

Our team at Integrity Landscape Services are experienced and knowledgeable on the installation of Polymeric Sand and would be happy to provide a quote to install a new brick patio or walkway, with Polymeric Sand, at your home!

How To Build A Long Lasting Brick Paver Patio

People often shy away from installing a brick patio or walkway because they have seen or had a brick patio/walkway that has failed or settled. Many times the reason for a failed brick patio/walkway is not the actual brick pavers but instead the type and quality of base material that was installed. An older patio/walkway will often be installed on a sand base which can lead to problems. The process and techniques used when installing a patio/walkway base have changed to make a brick patio or walkway stronger and able to stand the test of time.

The base begins by excavating the area to prepare for the base material. Once the proper grade is set, the earth is then compacted to prepare for traffic bond. Traffic bond, a mix of crushed limestone chips and fines, is then added on top of the earth and compacted in lifts to form a hard, dense surface. Next a thin layer of crushed limestone sand is added and the pitch of the patio/walkway is set. Once the base is completed, the brick pavers and a paver restraint are installed with beveled stakes to hold the pavers in place. Lastly, a variety of sand materials can be added to fill the joints of the pavers to complete the patio or walkway. The more time, energy, effort and expense that is put into the patio or walkway base, the better the outcome will be. Just like a house, a patio/walkway is only as strong as it’s foundation.

Another potential failure for a patio/walkway, brick or concrete, is improper pitch. If you notice standing water or pooling on a patio or walkway surface after a rain, then the patio/walkway was not engineered correctly. Water can have a very damaging affect on patios/walkways due to the freeze/thaw that occurs in our Wisconsin climate. Over time, the freeze/thaw can cause a patio/walkway to lift, crack or settle. A patio/walkway should always be pitched to allow water to run off to a designated area.

Concrete vs. Brick Patio

Homeowners often struggle between choosing a material for their new patio, “Should I go with concrete or brick pavers?” Here is what we believe to be the pros and cons for both materials:

Pros of Brick Pavers:
1. Large selection of styles, colors and textures.
2. Easy to clean and maintain.
3. Pavers come with a lifetime warranty from cracking.
4. Adds a more elegant and ornate look.

Cons of Brick Pavers:
1. More joints.
2. Potentially more expensive.

Pros of Concrete:
1. Cost effective.
2. Easy to clean and maintain.
3. Uniform look.

Cons of Concrete:
1. Cracks can be unsightly and ugly.
2. Only a few colors to choose from.
3. Difficult to repair.
4. Difficult to maintain a consistent thickness throughout the surface.

If you are interested in viewing a number of brick paver options, please feel free to stop by our outdoor display.  Or if you would like to contact us today to schedule a time to meet with our landscape designers to discuss which option is right for you!
